Testing Center Expectations
DSS Testing Centers work closely with students and instructors to support the implementation of testing accommodations. Students using the Testing Centers are expected to follow the guidelines below. These guidelines help DSS prepare for exams, provide approved accommodations, and maintain a secure testing environment.
Scheduling Exams
- Students should schedule exams at least five business days before the exam date.
- Business days include Monday through Friday and do not include weekends or University holidays.
- Students should contact DSS as soon as possible if their exam may fall outside DSS Testing Center hours.
- Students who experience scheduling issues before the deadline should contact DSS as soon as possible.
Exam Materials
- Students may use only materials approved by their instructor or permitted through an approved accommodation.
- Students should bring any materials required for their exam, including Scantron forms when applicable.
- DSS provides most standard testing materials, including computers, scratch paper, pencils, noise-canceling headphones, and disposable earbuds.
- Cell phones, smart watches, smart glasses, and other smart devices are generally not permitted during testing.
Exam Check-In
- Students should arrive early to put their belongings away and begin their exam on time.
- Students should check in with DSS Testing Center staff when they are ready to begin.
- Students may be asked to present an ECU OneCard or other photo identification.
- Students who anticipate being late due to an unexpected circumstance should notify DSS as soon as possible.
- DSS Testing Centers provide a 15-minute grace period for scheduled exams.
- Students arriving more than 15 minutes late may need instructor approval before testing can begin.
During Exams
- Students are expected to follow all University academic integrity expectations while testing with DSS.
- Students are encouraged to use the restroom before beginning an exam.
- Bathroom breaks are generally not permitted unless approved as an accommodation or authorized by Testing Center staff.
- Students should notify Testing Center staff immediately if they identify any concerns related to their exam. Examples include exam timing, accommodations, technology, exam instructions, or distractions within the testing environment.
Exam Check-Out
- Students should log out of any testing platforms before leaving the Testing Center.
- All scratch paper and testing materials should be returned to DSS Testing Center staff at the conclusion of the exam.
